WHS lax nets 2-fer

WESTFIELD – It was two-wins-for-the-price-of-one for hometown fans of the Westfield High School varsity lacrosse program Monday.
At home on Monday, the Westfield High School boys’ lacrosse team routed Belchertown 13-2 in its season opener. On the adjacent field, the Bombers’ girls squad obliterated Cathedral 22-1.
“We finally had two days of practice and a lined field,” said Westfield girls’ lax coach Paul Fenwick, whose team rebounded from an 18-4 season opening loss to Agawam. “Today was much better. We had a lot of scoring – it was very good.”
Ashlee Owen (6 goals, 1 assist), Mary Boudreau (4 goals), and McKenzie Macloud (3 goals) led the Westfield scoring attack.
The Bombers (1-1) won 95 percent of all of the draws.

BOYS’ LACROSSE
Westfield 13, Belchertown 2
Kevin Papineau (4 goals, 2 assists), Ryan Wilson (3 goals, 1 assist), Max Miller (4 goals), Matt Lacroix (2 goals, 1 assist), and Sam Scarfo (3 assists) led the offense for Westfield.
Bombers’ goalie Jake Cupak collected eight saves.
“The guys played hard,” said Westfield coach Mark Cavalon.

BOYS’ TENNIS
Westfield 5, South Hadley 0
Westfield’s top singles player displayed his solid skill set, and the Bombers recorded a clean sweep of the South Hadley Terriers in the season opener Monday.
Luiz Briand and Chris Unger won at first and second singles, respectively, for Westfield (both 6-0, 6-0). Bombers’ third singles player, Jacob Barbieri defeated his opponent, 6-1, 6-4.
Westfield’s Tanner Dasso and Tillman Riemer won at first doubles 6-3, 6-2; Jesse Burlingame and Aaron Caplette won by forfeit, 6-0, 6-0.
Said Westfield coach John Morizio: “The team looked solid throughout.”
The Bombers return to action Tuesday against visiting Central at 4 p.m.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD
Southwick-Tolland 92, Palmer 45
Jonathan Collins won four events to lead Southwick in its season opener on the road. Collins claimed first in the triple jump (35-4 1/2), high jump (5-6), 400 meters (59.4), and 200 meters (24.5).
Rams’ Colin Devine was also instrumental in the team’s victory, recording first-place finishes in the long jump (17-4), 110 meter hurdles (18.69), and the 400 hurdles (73.0).
Billy Doidolori (discus, 104-0), Juan Fuentes (100 meters, 11.7), and the 4×100 relay team (49.3) – Fuentes, Mike Flemming, Nick Peterson, and John Devine – each won individual events for Southwick.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Westfield def. Chicopee Comp 18-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-12
Westfield rallied from a 2-sets-to-none deficit to defeat the defending Western Massachusetts champion Chicopee Comp Colts in Monday’s season opener on the road.
“This was a huge win for us, especially being down two sets,” said Westfield coach Tyler Wingate. “It’s just a great way to start our season.”
Ian Wolski recorded 18 kills, 13 digs, and three aces; setter Andy Jacques had 33 assists and 10 digs; and, Ivan Zuez finished with 31 digs and three aces to lead Westfield. Bombers’ C.J. McMahon also contributed 10 kills and 10 digs.
