WESTFIELD – The Babe Ruth All-Stars shined all across Western Massachusetts Thursday night.
The Westfield Babe Ruth 14-Year-Old All-Stars, behind the sharp pitching of Austin St. Pierre, defeated Amherst 7-2 in a District 2 tournament opener at Bullens Field. In Franklin County, the Whip City’s 13-year-old team whipped up on the home team 15-5.
St. Pierre recorded a whopping 17 strikeouts for the 14s, allowing three hits and two earned runs in a complete game effort.
Offensively, Sean Murphy went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, Zach Jarvis had a run-scoring sac-fly, and Scott Walsh and Jake Colepietro both had one-run singles for Westfield. Ari Schwartz walked three times and scored two runs.
This year’s 14-year-old All-Stars team is essentially the one that earned a trip to the World Series last summer as 13-year-olds. A word of warning to the rest of Western Mass., the state, and the entire northeast – WATCH OUT!
13-YEAR-OLD ALL-STARS
Westfield 15, Franklin County 5
The Westfield Babe Ruth 13-Year-Old All-Stars opened the District 2 Tournament with a resounding 15-5 win over Franklin County.
Mitchell Longley (2-for-4, 2 doubles, 3 runs, 4 RBIs), Jack Yvon (2-3, double, 3 runs, RBI), Dalen Mochak (2-4, 1 run, 2 RBIs) and Kyle Roberts (2-5, 2 runs, RBI, 4 stolen bases) provided the offensive power for Westfield.
John Daley picked up the win for Westfield with 1 2-3 innings of hitless relief. Daley entered the game with Westfield leading 6-3 with runners on first and second with one out in the third inning. He struck out the first two batters he faced in the third to get out of a jam and then retired the side in order in the fourth. Conner Koziol struck out three over two innings of relief work and Nate Bonini closed out the game by pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
Westfield performed flawlessly on defense and did not commit an error throughout the entire
game. The two teams meet again in the best-of-3 series on Saturday at Bullens Field, beginning at 4 p.m.
