WESTFIELD – Two area men are hospitalized at Baystate Medical Center after a crash Wednesday afternoon on Holyoke Road.
City police were notified of the accident at 1:09 p.m. and Officer Charles Kielbasa was the first officer to arrive at the site of the crash, where he was soon joined by Sgt. Alex Baginski and Officer Michael Bradley.
Kielbasa reports the operator of a 2001 International truck, a large construction vehicle, said that he had been operating westbound on Holyoke Road and saw a 2003 Honda Accord on Springdale Road stop briefly, before it turned on to Holyoke Road, where it entered the path of his truck. He said he was unable to avoid a collision.
A witness to the accident supported the trucker’s account and said that the trucker had tried to avoid the car but was not able to prevent the crash.
The operator of the car said that he could not remember what had happened.
The responding firefighters report that hydraulic tools were needed to extricate the two occupants of the Honda.
Both were transported by fire department ambulance to Baystate Medical center where both were admitted.
The operator, David G. Goncalves of 50 Andrew St., Ludlow, was reported to be in serious condition at the hospital Wednesday evening.
A passenger, Joseph Toporowski of 18 Campus View Drive, Montgomery, was a listed in fair condition.
This morning, Toporowksi had been upgraded to good condition while Goncalves’ condition remains serious.
