PVCA escapes ‘Pit’

HUNTINGTON – The Gateway Regional High School boys’ basketball team just missed out on its first victory of the season.
Pioneer Valley Christian Academy narrowly avoided a loss, edging out host Gateway 49-46 Friday night at the “Gator Pit.” Sam Gobelle led PVCA with 19 points, 16 of which came in the first half.
“We talked about (Sam) at halftime,” Gateway coach Mike O’Connell said. “The boys made a nice adjustment … It was a nice response.”
The Gators held Gobelle to just three second-half points.
Peter Kowal (11 points), Johnny Haskell (8), Brett Turban (8), and Shane Mastello (7) led Gateway, which nearly tied the game with a 3-pointer in the waning seconds.

Bernard, Headley spark WHS
Westfield 85, Minnechaug 39
It was a big night across the board for Westfield.
Isaiah Headley nearly pulled off a triple-double (18 points, 9 assists, 8 rebounds). Rodney Bernard came off the bench to score 17 points, 13 of which came in the first quarter, including three 3’s and two breakaway lay-ups off of his own steals to lead Westfield.
Manny Golob (13 points) and John O’Brien (10) each netted double-digits for the Bombers, and Nick Hall and Matt Garlo each had eight. Garlo came off the bench to drain two 3-pointers.

McKenna Paces Saints
McCann Tech 73, St. Mary 21

Steve McKenna led St. Mary with eight points at Westfield Middle School South. Saints’ Andrew Illnicky had six.

GIRLS’ HOOPS
Morin Nets Double-Double in Loss
Holyoke 59, Westfield 42

Holyoke drained five 3-pointers in the second half to rally past visiting Westfield.
Alexa Morin recorded a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) for the Bombers, and Karly Mastello scored 11 points.

Foley Top Saint
Putnam 50, St. Mary 14

Brianna Metellus scored 20 points to lead Putnam to a road victory at Westfield Middle School North.
Karissa Foley led St. Mary with six. Alissa Easton had four for the Saints.

Madison Pelletier scored the lone goal for Cathedral/WHS with an assist from Katie Joyal at Amelia Park Ice Arena. Panthers goalie Lexi Levere finished with 27 saves.

BOYS’ ICE HOCKEY
Colts Double Up STM
Chicopee Comp 8, St. Mary 4

Chicopee Comprehensive’s Jeremy Lewis had a hat trick, and Cam Kagen contributed two goals and two assists to spoil St. Mary’s home contest Friday night.
Joe Trombley also scored two goals for the Colts.
Colan Rock tallied two goals to lead St. Mary’s. Saints’ Ashton Bourbonnais and Charlie White each had one.
St. Mary’s goalie Matt Brady finished with 27 saves. Turners Falls netminder Parker Nunes had 13.
