WESTFIELD – The puck dropped on the 3rd annual Kevin Major Memorial hockey tournament Sunday morning at Amelia Park Ice Arena. While several teams have hit the ice already, play will pick back up later this week and continue all throughout the weekend.
Official opening ceremonies will commence Saturday, August 10 at noon with the Kevin J. Major Youth Sports Foundation set to donate another Automatic External Defibrillator, as well as announce plans to sponsor an Under-19 sled hockey team at Amelia. Foundation officials will also present a scholarship to the Springfield Junior Pics hockey team. CPR/AED training will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. MoFroYo is expected to hand out free samples of its frozen yogurt sometime after 1 p.m.
The organization’s founder, Susan Canning (Kevin’s mother) said:
“The community means everything to us. Without (them), we couldn’t do it. It’s unbelievable the outpouring of support that we’ve had. It allows us to give back to the community.”
The Junior Bombers 1 and Holy Name Squirts teams were the first to take the ice Saturday, with Holy Name squeezing out a 7-3 win. Despite the loss, Westfield’s Matt McMahon, Connor Fitzgerald, and Aidan Fitzgerald each managed to net a goal.
In the second game, the Junior Bombers 2 took on the Junior Falcons, with the Whalers (St. Mary High School players) and Clap Bomb Crew (WHS) set to play in the evening. Tournament action resumes Thursday at 5 p.m., with several more games to be played over a four-day stretch. For a complete listing of teams and schedules, visit ameliaparkice.org.
