Accident downs power lines, closes road

WESTFIELD–A one-vehicle accident involving a pole and resulting in downed power lines Wednesday morning resulted in a portion of Root Road being closed.

According to Westfield Police, a one-vehicle accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, after a vehicle reportedly left the roadway and struck a telephone pole that had electrical wires attached. The wires ended up in the roadway, creating an issue for morning travelers on Root Road.

According to the police log, a passerby called in a report of seeing several vehicles with their hazard lights on in the area.

Southampton Police assisted in the incident by blocking off a portion of Root Road, extending from Valley Road to Brickyard Road, for a portion of the morning.

According to Westfield Police Capt. Michael McCabe, the vehicle had reportedly left the roadway after attempting to go through a turn. Icy conditions contributed to the accident.

Police reported that the occupant of the vehicle that struck the pole was reportedly not injured, although a tow truck was requested for the vehicle.
