Adamites, Bombers soar again

AGAWAM – Deja vu.
Change the colors of the uniforms. Substitute red and silver for orange and brown. Other than that, the end results were basically the same for the Westfield High School football team.
One week after shredding the East Longmeadow Spartans 42-14, the Westfield Bombers dismantled the Agawam Brownies 46-6 Friday on the road.
“East Longmeadow, Agawam – there was not much of a difference,” said Westfield sophomore quarterback Matt Adamites, who passed for four touchdowns and rushed for another against the Brownies (2-2). “They had a lot of the same defensive looks that we could take advantage of.”
Westfield (3-1) dominated from start to finish. The Bombers set the tempo, controlling the ball for 11 minutes, 20 seconds in the first quarter alone.
Westfield immediately established the run in quick fashion. After an incomplete pass from Matt Adamites on their first play of the game, Nick Clausen carried the ball five straight times, converting a fourth-and-1 from the Agawam 30-yard line. Three plays later, Clausen fumbled the ball.

Agawam went 3-and-out on its first drive.
Westfield took over at their own 30-yard line and moved the ball 70 yards in three plays, the big play coming on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Adamites to C.J. Flores-Skribiski with 5:36 remaining in the first quarter. Skribiski shot across the middle near the 30-yard line, scooped up the pass from Adamites, the ball just inches from the the turf, and raced 30 more yards for the score.
Westfield’s defense forced another 3-and-out on the next Agawam series.
On Westfield’s next play from scrimmage, Clausen ripped off a 59-yard run. Three plays later, Adamites made a nice juke move to get free for a 4-yard TD scamper with 2:31 left in the quarter.
Two plays into Agawam’s next series, Skribiski intercepted the ball.
Westfield scored again, this time on a two-yard TD run from Clausen with 40 ticks left on the first quarter clock to seize a 19-0 lead. The key play on the series was a 26-yard pass from Adamites to William Brewster.
Westfield followed up yet another Agawam 3-and-out with another score.
Westfield’s first play on the ensuing series resulted in a 38-yard touchdown pass from Adamites to Mike Collins 25 seconds into the second quarter.
Adamites made the play happen with his feet, scrambling to get away from the Brownies’ defense. The sophomore quarterback remained poised, clearly staying one yard behind the line of scrimmage and lofting a high-arcing pass over the top of the defense to Collins, who plucked the ball out of the air around the 1-yard line and walked in untouched.
Agawam managed to hold onto the ball a bit longer on the next drive, but failed to generate any semblance of offense.
Westfield’s next drive produce more points when Collins made a diving catch in the end zone to complete an 8-yard scoring play. Adamites’ TD pass made it 32-0.
Agawam broke up the shutout by capping off a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a one-yard keeper from backup quarterback Colin Malecki to make it 33-6 late in the first half. Malecki was playing for the starting quarterback, who was injured during last week’s game.
Even the halftime break could not slow Westfield.
Agawam botched the opening kickoff of the second half, the ball finally winding up in the arms of Westfield. On the Bombers very next play, Adamites connected with Mason Collingwood for a 22-yard touchdown pass.
Agawam came up empty on its next drive. It was just the opposite for Westfield as Clausen ripped off runs of 19 and 22 yards before Anthony Suhocki plunged one yard over the goal line with 8:31 to go in the third quarter.
The rest of the game was left to the backups, and a running clock in the fourth quarter was the only mercy that Agawam could get ahold of.
“It’s Bomber football,” Adamites said. “We just keep doing what we’re doing. …After the loss against Leominster, I think people started to overlook us. The last two games, we’ve just been proving everyone wrong.”
Clausen finished the game with 160 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries.
“(Our offensive linemen) just find their blocks, get to the linebackers, and that’s how I make it work,” Clausen said. “They do everything for me so it makes my life a lot easier. …Once we get our game going really with the run, we can set up the defense to do what we really want.”
Although Westfield football head coach Rob Parent said there are several things his team still needs to work on, he praised his players’ efforts.
“It’s one thing to win a game and to win it the way we won it last week,” coach Parent said. “It’s another thing to follow it up with a duplicate performance. That means we are taking our practice reps seriously; we’re taking the game seriously and that’s encouraging. That’s all we can do to continue to get better each week.”
Westfield will return to action next Friday night at home against Chicopee Comprehensive High School. Kickoff is currently slated for 7 p.m. The Bombers will play three of their next four games at their home stadium, Bullens Field.
