All-Stars set to shine

WESTFIELD – The summer-time temperatures are not the only thing heating up the city’s local ballparks. Later this week, All-Star season will arrive for youth baseball teams from Westfield Little League and Babe Ruth.
Westfield Babe Ruth is set to begin All-Star action Thursday with the 14-year-olds hosting Amherst at Bullens Field at 7 p.m. The city’s 13s play at Franklin County at 5:30.
On Saturday, the 13-year-olds and 15-year-olds host Franklin County at 4 and 7 p.m., respectively. Both games will be played at Bullens Field.
The Westfield 15s travel to Franklin County Monday at 5:30, and the 14s take on Amherst on the road at Ziomek Field.
All three tournaments are district-level competition, featuring best-of-3 series.
Win or lose, the city’s 13-year-old team will advance to the state competition as the host team, beginning Friday, July 12 at Bullens Field. Last year’s 13s, which advanced to the World Series in Washington, will now compete as 14s and host the regionals in late July.
LITTLE LEAGUE UPDATE: The Westfield Little League All-Stars also begin play Thursday when the city’s North and South 10-11-year-olds collide in a District 2 opening round game at Cross Street Field, beginning at 6 p.m. For the latest schedule of upcoming games for all of the age groups, follow The Westfield News daily or visit www.thewestfieldnews.com.
