EAST LONGMEADOW – Mary Bates had a hand in 10 of her team’s goals, scoring five goals and assisting on five others as East Longmeadow handed the Westfield girls’ lacrosse team a tough opening day loss, 16-6.
The Spartans took advantage of their home turf.
“That played a part,” Westfield coach Paul Fenwick said of the fast playing surface. “We had trouble adjusting.”
There were still a couple of bright spots for Westfield. Bombers’ Olivia Chaoush and Samantha Kane scored two goals apiece.
Said Fenwick: “Hopefully we know what to work on, and make the necessary adjustments.”
Westfield (0-1) will look to rebound in its next contest Wednesday against the Amherst Hurricanes. Game site and time had not been determined.
