AUBURNDALE, FLA. – Sophomore starting pitcher Ray Bell tossed five strong innings and freshman designated hitter Anthony Crowley launched his first collegiate home run as Westfield State defeated Suffolk University, 5-2 at Lake Myrtle Park on Tuesday.
Bell allowed just two hits through five shutout innings, walking two and striking out two.
Westfield scored twice in the fourth inning on a pair of RBI doubles by Tyler Beach and Dan McCormack.
The Owls tacked on three more in the fifth, two on Crowley’s homer, a line shot to left field that rang off the scoreboard above the outfield fence. Christian Morales followed a few batters later with an RBI triple.
Westfield totaled 16 hits on the day, with Danny DiMatteo and Dan Whigham each recording three-hit games.
Suffolk starter Ryan Pordes (0-2) took the loss, yielding 14 hits and five runs over 4-2/3 innings.
Westfield State improved to 2-4 on the season with the win, while Suffolk falls to 5-2.
Westfield will have a “B” squad game tomorrow, with the full varsity nine returning to action Thursday to face Stockton (NJ) University in a 9:30 AM double-header at Lake Myrtle Park’s field number five. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
