Twist of fate

WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School baseball team was cruising comfortably for five innings Tuesday, but it all came undone in the blink of an eye.
Northampton rallied for eight runs in the top of the sixth inning and the Blue Devils shocked Westfield 11-7 Tuesday at Bullens Field.
Westfield scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Northampton bounced back with a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Westfield responded with four more in the bottom of the fifth to go up 7-2.
After the sixth-inning explosion though, Westfield suddenly found itself trailing. The Bombers were not able to recover.
Andrew Grygrcewicz (2-for-4, triple, 3 runs, RBI) and Noah Brink (2-for-3, double, walk, 2 runs, RBI) delivered multi-hit outings for Northampton. Blue Devils’ R.J. Safron scored three runs.
Mason St. Pierre, Jimmy Hagan, and James Dolan collected hits for Westfield. Bombers’ Kyle Roberts had two RBIs.

SOFTBALL
Moniz homers in loss
Minnechaug 6, Westfield 3

Minnechaug exploded for four first-inning runs, and held off a late Westfield rally to escape the Whip City with a narrow victory.
Westfield’s Hayley Moniz hit a three-run home run, Erin Gour went 3-for-3, and Lindsey Kiltonic singled and scored a run.
Moniz allowed seven hits in a complete game on the mound, striking out nine batters.

BOYS LACROSSE
Maggipinto, Bombers prevail
Westfield 6, Minnechaug 3

Max Maggipinto netted a hat trick, Cam Theriault had one goal and two assists, and Matt Bonsall collected one goal and one assist for Westfield. Danny Antonellis also scored a goal and Will Cameron had two assists.
Westfield goalie Alex Beauchemin made seven saves.
Zach Cree, Tyler Shrewsbury and Dan Buckelew were outstanding at Westfield’s defensive midfield. Bombers’ Gavin Carzello, Kris Meneses and Dalton Kiniry were solid at close defense.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Bombers sweep to 6-0
Westfield def. East Longmeadow 25-12, 25-15, 25-14

Westfield extended its winning streak to 6-0 to begin the season with a sweeping road victory.
James Pavlyuk (10 kills, 1 block), Sam Pavlyuk (5 kills, 1.5 blocks), Luis Castro (32 assists, 1 ace), Gabe Santos (6 kills), and Gabe Santiago (7 digs, 2 aces) fueled the Bombers’ latest win.
