Bombers blast Blue Devils

NORTHAMPTON – One Westfield baseball pitcher had a blast, figuratively speaking, and his teammate literally had a blast as they came together to help bomb the competition.
Brian Strange homered, doubled, scored two runs, and had three RBIs at the plate and Jimmy Hagan scattered four hits over five innings of work on the mound while racking up 10 Ks to lead Westfield past Northampton 14-5 on the road Tuesday afternoon.
Alex LaCourse also had two hits and drove in two runs for Westfield. Bombers’ Mason Collingwood doubled, had two runs and three RBIs; Bailey Collier scored three runs and stole two bases; and, Spencer Cloutier and Luisin Enchautegui also scored two runs apiece.

Tigers rally
Westfield Technical Academy 13, Putnam 9

Westfield Tech rallied to cap off a great comeback in an interleave battle at Bullens Field.
Putnam exploded for seven runs in the top of the first inning, but Westfield Tech responded with four runs in the second and three in the third to tie the score at 7-all. The Tigers added six more runs to complete the comeback and hold on for the win.
Tobey Barlow allowed just two hits and struck out eight batters over the last six innings.
Freshmen Josh Sturmer and Colby Nadeau led the Westfield Tech attack. Sturmer went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Nadeau was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Each batter also had a double.
Connor Medieros and Mike Durkee had two hits apiece for Westfield Tech. Durkee stole three bases. Tigers’ Mateo Sanchez and Trent Adam also recorded hits.
Westfield Tech improved to 1-1.

BOYS LACROSSE
Falcons ground Bombers
Minnechaug 9, Westfield 6

It may have been a sunshiny day for some local high school sports action, but the end results were a bit murky for one team. Minnechaug spoiled what could have been a nice day for Westfield, turning back the visiting Bombers.
Cam Theriault led Westfield with four points (3 goals, 1 assist), Nick Clausen tallied two goals, Will Cameron had one goal and one assist, and Ryan Metcalf and Christian Nalepenski each had an assist.
Westfield goalie Nick Mee made nine saves, several of which were from in close. Bombers’ Gavin Carzello, Kris Meneses and Aidan Boyle led the defense with solid man-to-man play and clears.

Mackenzie Liptak recorded a hat trick to lead Westfield.

Nicole Hannigan mashed a great slam, and Stephanie Paiva (2-run) and Donna Viel (solo shot) each homered in a road rout for Gateway.

GIRLS TENNIS
Falcons clip Bombers
Minnechaug 3, Westfield 2

Clara Hinck and Brianna Shvetsov won at first and second singles, respectively, for Westfield.
Hinck dominated Minnechaug’s Avi Diefenderfer 6-3, 6-0; Shvetsov downed Ali Boudreau, 6-3, 6-3.
Westfield’s No. 1 doubles pair Allison Bower and Karina Popoli-Sarat lost a hard-fought match to Katie Duncan and Lea Kuselias 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Bombers silence Purple Knights
Westfield 5, Holyoke 0

Clara Hinck and Brianna Shvetsov both won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 against their respective foes in singles action.
MaKenzie Ritchie and Cayla Osowski defeated Holyoke’s Kara McGuinness and Francheska Rivera 6-1, 6-1 in top doubles play.
Westfield won by default at third singles and second doubles.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
Hiltz paves way to Rams victory
Southwick 74, Sabis 61

Bianca Hiltz won three events – the triple jump (32-4), high hurdles (16.8), and 200 meters (28.9) – to lead Southwick to victory.
Other Southwick winners included: Kayla Pudlo (long jump, 15-4), Madison Loubier (mile, 6:39), Lauren Sussman (400 meters, 69.5), Seddon (400M hurdles, 1:29.8), Hannah Bannish (800M, 2:51.6), Marissa Longhi (2 mile, 13:15.8), and the 4×400 relay team (5:29.8).

Ronghi, Moore post wins

Joshua Ronghi won the 400 meters (57.6) and Aidan Moore took first in the 2-mile (12:37) for Southwick.
