WESTFIELD – The weather outside might be frightful, but it was Westfield baseball that scared away the competition in its season opener.
Mason St. Pierre and Aidan Dunn both contributed from both sides of the mound and Westfield chased away Billerica 10-3 Sunday at Bullens Field.
Westfield starting pitcher Mason St. Pierre tossed a two-hitter, striking out six batters, while allowing one unearned run over five innings. Pierre also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
Aidan Dunn went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. He also tossed two innings of three-hit relief, striking out six and allowing two unearned runs.
Scott Bussell finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored for Westfield.
“Considering we lost 13 players last year, the first-year players who stepped up and the few remaining ones that returned from last year played a great ball game,” Westfield High School head varsity baseball coach Mike Kennedy said. “I like the fact that we didn’t go for the big hit. We did what we’re good at, hitting the line drive, the singles, the doubles and running the bases.”
