Bombers rally, fall short

HOLYOKE – Destiny Calderon (20 points) and Teniyah Morales (15) combined for more than half of Holyoke’s points, and the Purple Knights staved off a late Westfield comeback in high school girls basketball action Thursday night.
Holyoke, which put together a 17-11 first quarter lead and led at the half, 27-19, turned back visiting Westfield 59-56.
After falling behind by 18 points in the third quarter, Westfield put together a furious rally. The Bombers outscored the Purple Knights, 27-12 in the fourth quarter but fell just short of completing a miracle.
Kaela Mochak led Westfield with 13 points. Bombers’ Olivia Hadla finished with 10, Chandler Pedolzky had eight, Alexis Wood collected seven, and Casey Almeida and Emma Pedolzky each recorded six.

Marsh leads Tigers
Duggan Academy 56, Westfield Technical Academy 23

Duggan’s Jesalie Santini Torres led all scorers with 20 points. Westfield Tech’s Leilani Marsh netted a team-high six, and Kelsey Carroll and Emily White had five apiece.

Donais paces Saints
Sci-Tech 60, St. Mary’s 24

Sci-Tech produced a pair of 20-point scorers against St. Mary’s at Westfield Middle School North. Olivia Goodrow tallied 23 and Ann Harrington pumped in 20.
Madie Donais led St. Mary’s with 14.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Red Raiders top Gators
Hampshire 69, Gateway 29

David Helems scored a game-high 21 points, and Hampshire (1-5) won its first game of the 2017-18 regular season.
Tanner Beebe and Nathaniel Bushor finished with eight and seven points, respectively, for Gateway (0-7).
“You can’t spot a team 30 points and expect results,” Gateway coach Kevin McVeigh said. “We’ve got to get these guys to work and play together.”

Iglesias leads Rams to 5-0
Southwick 57, Granby 39

Hunter Iglesias fueled Southwick’s victory with a game-high 20 points, and Billy Strain had 13. The Rams remained unbeaten at 5-0.

BOYS ICE HOCKEY
Bombers net tie
Westfield 1, Marblehead 1

Alex Beauchemin scored one goal, Matt Pelletier and Connor Cottengim assisted, and Cameron Parent made 21 saves to preserve a tie at Gloucester High School.
Westfield entered Thursday’s game having lost to Beverly 4-3. In that game, Cottengim, Gavin Carzello, and Max Maggipinto scored one goal apiece as the Bombers built a 3-0 lead. Beverly rallied for four third period goals.

GIRLS ICE HOCKEY
Markstein, Lancers set pace
Longmeadow (WHS Co-Op) 5, Dennis-Yarmouth 2

Taylor Markstein had a hand in three goals, scoring once and assisting twice as Longmeadow upended Dennis-Yarmouth at Tony Kent Ice Arena in South Dennis.
The Lancers, who co-op with Westfield High, improved to 2-1.

WRESTLING
Phil Tomkiel Holiday Tournament (Agawam H.S.)

Westfield finished a respectable 10th place among 18 teams at the Phil Tomkiel Holiday Tournament at Agawam High School. The Bombers were unable to wrestle in half of the 14 weight classes due to illness.
Westfield 138-pound wrestler Caleb Cree went 4-1 with wins over Dighton’s Jared Wood in the quarterfinals and Longmeadow’s Brodie Fazio to claim third place. For Cree, it was sweet revenge after losing to Fazio by pin a week ago. This time, Cree won 5-0.
At 126, senior captain Isaac Santos won three matches, including impressive wins of 4-3 and 3-2. Junior Vitally Borodin (132 pounds) also won three matches.
Santos and Borodin were unable to wrestle for fifth place due to the new one-day, five-match maximum rule.
At 152, sophomore Cam Foster continues to improve. Foster won three matches to finish in fifth place.
Freshman Jack Demarinis (120 pounds) and senior Dennis Sevastianov (160) also picked up victories for Westfield.

Ware 54, Southwick 36

Kathleen Shea scored a career-high nine points for Southwick. Rams’ Annette St. Jacques and Morgan Grilli.
In JV action, Ware defeated Southwick 43-20.
