WEST SPRINGFIELD – The Westfield High School softball team reigned all over West Springfield’s parade.
Westfield pitcher Hayley Moniz pitched seven strong innings in rain-soaked conditions, and the Bombers put up eight runs on the West Springfield Terriers in an 8-0 shutout Monday at Mittineague Park.
Moniz scattered six hits in a complete game. She struck out five batters and walked one.
“Today’s win was a big boost for us,” Westfield coach Tim Desmond said. “We really wanted this one. Last time we played (them) we let the game slip away and wanted to avenge that loss.”
“We knew the weather was going to play a big part today, and it was important to get some runs early,” he added. “The rain held off just long enough to get the game in, which we were very happy about. We have a busy week this week and we did not want to see a rainout.”
Westfield jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, and put away West Side with four more in the seventh.
Sam Schieppe hit a booming triple to left field to drive in one run; Lindsey Kiltonic had a hit and two RBIs; Nicole Clemente and Nicole Graves each collected a hit and an RBI; Libby Irwin drove in a run; and, Morgan Zabielski had a hit.
With the victory, Westfield improved to 11-6. The Bombers have now won four straight games and six of their last seven.
