WESTFIELD – Everyone got in on the act, you might have thought it was a high school play.
The Westfield High School hockey team did perform well on its first stage of the season, playing in front of a home crowd this past weekend. Five different players scored to lead the Bombers past the Minnechaug Falcons 5-4 Saturday night at Amelia Park Arena.
Minnechaug led 2-1 following one period, but Westfield (1-0) rallied for two second-period goals. Both teams scored twice in the final period, and the Bombers held on.
Joshua Adams, Nathan Boucher, John Danahey, Max Maggipinto, and Liam Whitman scored one goal apiece for Westfield. Bombers’ Scotty Bussell, Ryan Porter, and Matt Pelletier each had one assist.
Westfield goalie Cam Parent finished with 23 saves.
Joshua DeCarolis, Noah Hemenway, and Nick Savoie each had a goal for Minnechaug. Falcons’ Matthew Kowal made three assists.
WRESTLING: The Westfield High School wrestling team went 3-1 in the kickoff duals at West Springfield High School. The Bombers defeated the Northampton Blue Devils 33-30, Smith Vocational 39-12, and South Hadley 34-30, losing only to host West Side.
Senior Captain Cole Cannady led Westfield. Cannady went 4-0 with four pins in a total of four minutes, 30 seconds.
Westfield freshman 145-pounder Nick Clawson (3-1) posted two impressive pins in his debut match; junior Jack Yvon finished the day undefeated at 160 pounds, winning a hard-fought battle against Smith Voke’s Justin Flores 8-5 and collecting a pin against West Side; 138-pound junior Louis Rogers (2-2) pinned two opponents; 126-pound junior Isaac Santos went 2-2 in his first-ever action; and 132-pound freshman Kaleb Cree won the day’s most exciting match, a narrow 23-22 win over Northampton’s Noah Brink.
Freshman Cerrito Serrano (195 pounds) and sophomore heavyweight Johann Shieppe also wrestled well for the Bombers.
JUNIOR VARSITY: In JV action, freshman Can Foster, and juniors Jamin Fuller and junior Vitaliy Borodin each picked up victories via pin.
Westfield coach Chris Malinowski also praised sophomores Ed Borodin, Ed Towers, Danny Avery and Doug Rogers for their efforts.
