WESTFIELD – Westfield 132-pound junior Vitalliy Borodin embodied what it means to be a Bomber wrestler this year in what might likely go down as the “match of the year.”
Trailing 8-1 after one period, Borodin made a tremendous turnaround by scoring 14 points in the final four minutes to win an incredible decision, 15-14, over Holyoke’s Juden Johnson. Westfield went on to defeat the Holyoke High wrestling team, 36-33.
There were several other highlights from Wednesday night’s match.
Sophomore Ed Borodin wrestled wrestled very well, losing a close decision to Chamuel Isquirdo. At 120, Cole Cannady won by pin in the first period over Jorge Jimenez. Freshman Cam Foster (138 pound) wrestled tremendously, winning 6-2 over Alex Hernandez. Freshman Nick Clauson (145) lost a hard-fought decision to Kevin Higgins, 6-3. Sophomore Ke-andre Godbout (152) wrestled up two weight classes and lost by the slimmest of margins, 4-3, to Jack Courchesne. Sophomore Joe Raco (182) came through in the clutch, turning his opponent late in the third period to pin Juan Perez. Senior captain Mike Malinowski (195) won by default over Nolan Keane. Junior Isaac Santos (126) also won by pin for Westfield.
Westfield improved to 8-2 overall, 4-1 league.

PVC rallies past WTA
Pioneer Valley Christian 44, Westfield Technical Academy 42
Pioneer Valley Christian rallied from a nine-point, first half deficit to get by visiting Westfield Technical Academy in a tight ballgame.
“We just ran out of steam,” Westfield Tech coach Kyle Dulude said. “They tightened up the defense and hit threes.”
Pioneer Valley’s 3-point shots in the final two minutes proved to be the difference.
Mark Klyuchits led Westfield Tech with 15 points. Tigers’ Vlad Biley finished with 11, and Luis Ruiz had seven.
“We played very good basketball tonight,” coach Dulude said. “A few things didn’t go our way. We are competitive and have a lot of games left in bunches. Hopefully we can play out the season healthy and play the game with pride.”
Rams rally past Mustangs
Southwick 53, Monson 45
Southwick capped off a comeback with a 23-10 fourth quarter to win on the road. The Rams return to action Friday at home against Granby. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
Hornets stave off Gators
McCann Tech 49, Gateway 47
Gateway’s furious fourth quarter rally – they outscored McCann Tech 22-13 in that quarter – fell just short.
Logan Tower (13 points), Jake Tower (11), and Lukas Zelazo (11) each scored in double digits to lead McCann. Gateway’s Shane Masello finished with a game-high 16 points, and Brett Turban had 13.

Bombers shut out Spartans
Westfield 3, East Longmeadow 0
Three different players scored – Scotty Bussell, Josh Adams, and Max Maggipinto – to lead Westfield at Amelia Park Arena. Liam Whitman had two assists, and Maggipinto, Spencer Cloutier, and Evan Glenzl each had one.
Westfield goalie Cam Parent (15 saves) earned a shutout.

Falcons nip Bombers
Minnechaug 97, Westfield 88
Tommy Russell, Patrick Lurgio, Nick Rosso, Jack Bouillard got Westfield off to a strong start, winning the medley relay in 1:46.12.
Rosso also won the 50 freestyle with a season’s best 22.68, and the 100 butterfly (55.19). Russell placed first in the 100 free (50.4) and 100 backstroke (1:57.67). Lurgio won the 100 breaststroke with a season best time of 1:08.69.
Kevin Hayes took home first in the diving competition with a Division 1 state qualifying score of 205.20.
Westfield also won the 400 freestyle relay with a team of Matt Morash, Cole Viamari, Rosso, and Russell. They finished with a league fastest time of 3:27.08.
“The boys put up a pretty good fight,” Westfield coach Tom Lewis said. “We were just a couple of touch-outs short of being able to win this one.”

Rachel Charette posted a Division 1 state-qualifying in the 100 freestyle with a first-place time of 56.37 and also won the 100 breaststroke (1:15.27), Lizzie Fraser won the 500 free (5:37.02), Emily Pease claimed gold in the 100 backstroke (1:04.24).
“We had some good swims tonight,” Westfield swim coach Tom Lewis said, “ but just a little bit tired and a little bit sick which kept us from being closer.”
