AGAWAM – The Agawam High School girls basketball team opened the season on a 12-2 run against visiting Westfield Friday night. The Bombers never managed to recover, and fell 68-56 in what turned out to be a frenetic, up-tempo game.
McKenzie Lockwood led Agawam – and all scorers – with 27 points.
Agawam maintained a double-digit lead throughout much of the game. Westfield pulled to within six points of a tie in the third quarter, but the Brownies continued to push the ball up the court and their lead soon ballooned to a 13-point margin.
Westfield made a few nice plays in the fourth quarter – a beautiful steal and breakaway lay-up from Kaela Mochak and a sick cross-over lay-up from Olivia Hadla – but Agawam remained just out of reach.
Mochak and Hadla finished with 17 and 15 points, respectively.
