Butera nets hat trick in WHS’ win

CHICOPEE – Halloween may still be several days away but Westfield’s Matt Butera recorded a hat trick and received a treat in the form of a victory on the road.
Matt Butera scored three goals to lead Westfield past host Chicopee Comprehensive 4-2 Thursday night.
The two teams exchanged goals early in the first half with Butera scoring two goals off of passes from Mike Visconti. Chicopee knotted the game twice before Igor Belykopytov tallied the game-winner with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Sam Winiarski assisted on the play.
For good measure, Butera tallied a goal in the waning seconds. Erdem Acha assisted.

Granby shuts out Gators
Granby 2, Gateway 0

Granby scored two goals – one in each half from Joe Desormier and Colby Forbush – to beat visiting Gateway.
Granby goalie Zachary Gorham made four saves in the shutout.

Red Raiders clip Rams
Hampshire 1, Southwick 0

Colin Dearborn scored the game’s lone goal in the second half to lift Hampshire on the road. Red Raiders’ goalie Nick O’Hare (6 saves) earned a shutout in net.
Southwick goalie Nick Chambers collected six saves.

Rossoshanskiy, PVC soar
Pioneer Valley Christian 5, St. Mary 0

Pioneer Valley Christian’s Andrew Rossoshanskiy scored two goals and Idriss Koyate made 16 saves in a shutout of St. Mary at Westfield Middle School North.

GIRLS’ SOCCER
Gators, Smith deadlocked
Gateway 1, Smith Academy 1

Sam Belardo scored first for Gateway with an assist from Bri Fellows. Smith Academy scored on a direct kick from 19 yards out, directing it into the right corner of the goal.
Gators’ goalie Becca Herman finished with three saves.

Rams, Golden Eagles knotted
Southwick 1, Central 1

Sabrina Provost scored off a pass from Krista Girroir for Southwick. Rams’ goalie Tori Richburg made seven saves.

FIELD HOCKEY
Purple Knights escape Whip City with ‘W’
Holyoke 1, Westfield 0
Summer Kaeppell tallied a second-half goal, the game’s only score, to send Holyoke to victory on the road.

JV GIRLS’ SOCCER
Southwick 3, Central 1

Emily Giancola scored the first two Southwick goals – Jordyn Demyon and Paige Arsenault assisted – and Mikaila Davenport (from Maggie Sullivan) tallied the team’s third.
Hannah Gerrish and Ashley Marchetti made five saves apiece for the Rams.
Southwick improved to 6-4-3.

JV BOYS’ SOCCER
Hampshire 6, Southwick 1

Jameson Secovich scored the lone goal for Southwick (11-2), which lost for just the second time all season. Jared O’Connor assisted.

BOYS’ SOCCER
Westfield Technical Academy 3, Ware 0

Westfield Tech scored three goals in the final 20 minutes of regulation to surge past Ware on the road.
Vitaliy Melnick broke through on a pass from Tyler Hall for the first Westfield Tech goal. Hall then scored off a set play from Dominic Rosario. Melnick scored his second goal, the team’s third, from an impossible angle to help the Tigers pull away.
Westfield Tech goalie Anatoliy Suprunchuck made a key save early in the second half to keep the game scoreless.
