WESTFIELD- Westfield emergency personnel were on the scene of a motor vehicle crash on the Massachusetts Air National Guard bridge on Route 20 late Thursday morning.

A motor vehicle was sent off the bridge after being rear ended by another vehicle according to police officials. A person driving a pickup truck suffered some sort of medical emergency causing them to lose control of their vehicle. The pickup truck then rear ended a smaller car, causing the car to go over the bridge and into the river below.

According to police, a witness to the accident quickly stopped their vehicle, got out, and went down into the river to help the vehicle’s sole occupant out of the destroyed car. The good Samaritan has not been identified.

The driver of the vehicle that fell into the river is expected to recover from their injuries, although it is still unclear how severe they were.

Police were seen directing traffic in the intersection East of the bridge while a crane from Interstate Towing began the process of pulling the car from the river.
