Police investigating Sept. 12 pedestrian death

WESTFIELD — Police are still investigating a motor vehicle accident on Sept. 12 in which an elderly man was apparently struck and killed by a motor vehicle on Mechanic Street.

Police officials said that M. Leonid Chepurin, 72, died the following morning after he was struck by a vehicle.

Sgt. Juanita Mejias said that the investigation into the cause of the accident is still ongoing, so few details have been made available to the public. The investigation is being conducted by the State Police CARS Team and the Hampden County District Attorney’s office.

In the police log for the incident, a Westfield resident is listed as an involved party, but police have not released the name of the driver.

Multiple callers had called 9-1-1 around 7:42 p.m. to report the accident. Chepurin was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where he died Sept. 13. A small memorial for Chepurin was set up near the site of the accident.

According to the National Weather Service, there was no precipitation in Westfield that day. The sun had set at 7:05 p.m.

More information about the accident will be made available when the investigation is complete, according to officials.
