WESTFIELD – Senior Peter Cassidy threw a complete game 2-hit shutout in game 1 to help Westfield State split a doubleheader with MCLA on Tuesday afternoon.
Westfield won game 1 by a 5-0 score, while MCLA took an 8-7 decision in the second game.
Cassidy allowed just two hits while striking out four and did not issue a walk in picking up his first win of the season. Danny Dimatteo’s two-run homer in the 1st inning proved to be all the offense the Owls would need. Senior shortstop Jeremy Tanguay finished 2-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
Mike Mancivalano (1-1) took the loss for MCLA.
Westfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning of the night cap, with Dan McCormack and and Dimatteo rapping RBI base hits for the Owls.
In the night cap, MCLA struck for eight runs, all unearned in the fourth inning. Rory Slattery had a 2-run double, and Mike Sullivan an RBI single for the trailblazers in the big inning.
Starter Todd Hunt went six innings to earn the win, while Liam Nolan pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save. Sullivan finished 2-3 at the plate to lead Blazer hitters.
Pete Liimatanien (2-1) took the tough luck loss for the Owls, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing just three hits but six runs, none earned. Dimatteo finished 3-4 and Tanguay added two more hits.
Westfield State is now 15-5 on the season, 3-3 in the MASCAC and will host Western New England in a non-conference game on Wednesday at 3:30. MCLA is 9-8 and 1-3 in the MASCAC.
