Competition developing in mayoral and school committee races

WESTFIELD – With a little more than one month to go to take out nomination papers for the 2021 municipal election on Nov. 2, some offices are contested, while others have no competition to date.

Efrain Luna of Roosevelt Avenue took out papers on June 15 for a run as Mayor of the City of Westfield for two years, to join Donald F. Humason, Jr. and Michael A. McCabe in the race. None of the candidates have turned in their papers or are yet certified. The last day to take out nomination papers is July 30.

Six incumbent councilors, Dan Allie, Brent B. Bean II, Dave Flaherty, Cindy C. Harris, Kristen L. Mello and Richard K. Sullivan Jr. have taken out papers for seven at-large seats. Harris and Bean have turned in their nomination papers, which have been certified.

No one has as yet taken out papers for Ward 1 Councilor, but incumbents Ralph J. Figy in Ward 2, Bridget Matthews-Kane in Ward 3, Michael Burns in Ward 4, John J. Beltrandi III in Ward 5, and William J. Onyski in Ward 6 have all taken out papers, and Burns has his in and certified.

As of the June 23 report from the city clerk’s office, no one who is not currently serving on the Westfield City Council has taken out nomination papers. All city council seats are for two years.

Several new and returning residents have taken out nomination papers for three available three-year terms on the School Committee. Joining the race with incumbents Timothy J. O’Connor, Cindy A. Sullivan and Heather W. Sullivan are Martha M. Breton, Jason A. LaFleur, Jeffrey L.Gosselin and Thomas A. Lewis. As of the June 23 report, none were listed as certified.

Nominations papers out for the Municipal Light Board are Kevin M. Kelleher Sr. in Ward 1, Ray Rivera in Ward 2, Dawn Renaudette in Ward 3, Francis L. Liptak in Ward 4, Joseph B. Mitchell in Ward 5, and Robert Sacco in Ward 6, all incumbents.

Taking nomination papers out for a six-year term for Athenaeum trustee is Andrea L. Pennington, who is not currently listed on the board.

The deadline for returning papers to the Board of Registrars is Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. The deadline for the Board of Registrars to file papers with the city clerk is on Tuesday, Aug. 17 at 5 p.m.

The deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers from the City Clerk for the Preliminary (Primary) Election is Thursday, Aug. 19 at 5 p.m. The drawing for ballot position will be held on Monday, Aug.t 23 at 5 p.m.

The deadline for voter registration for the preliminary election is Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 8 p.m..

The preliminary election will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers from the city clerk for the November General Election is Monday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m.

Last day to register to vote for the general election is Wednesday, Oct. 13, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The general election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 2 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
