WESTFIELD – Senior forward Jill Levrault (Somerset-Berkley/Somerset, Mass.) scored both goals, including the game-winner in overtime as UMass Dartmouth rallied for a 2-1 win over Westfield State in a Little East Conference field hockey game at Alumni Field on Saturday night.
Westfield took a 1-0 lead on its only shot on-goal in regulation, as junior midfielder Meg Doherty (Mansfield/Mansfield, Mass.) drove to the cage, stopped and pivoted back to her right and lifted a shot with a backhand to the left side netting for a 1-0 Owls lead.
Levrault leveled the game at 1-1 halfway through the second half with a hard shot from eight yards out after she gathered a loose ball that came in from the top of the circle.
The game went to overtime tied at 1-1.
Westfield’s Rachel Bunce (Dennis Yarmouth/East Dennis, Mass.) first shot on goal of overtime with 9:50 left, which was saved by Corsairs’ goalkeeper Allison Burke (Franklin/Franklin, Mass.).
One minute and seven seconds later Levrault drove into circle and uncorked the game winner from eight yards out beating sliding Owls’ goalkeeper Megan Fountaine (Scituate/Scituate, Mass.) who came out of net aggressively to challenge the shot.
Fountaine had been the equalizer in net for Westfield all night, making 12 saves in goal.
UMass Dartmouth had a 24-5 edge in total shots and a 17-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Westfield is now 6-5, 4-2 in the Little East Conference. UMass Dartmouth is 10-3, 6-1.
Westfield will host Smith in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m., while UMass Dartmouth will host Plymouth next Saturday.
