WESTFIELD – Just a week or two ago, no one would have thought that toilet paper could be come a form of economic trade.

Fast forward to the declaration of the coronavirus pandemic and there is a toilet paper shortage as people continue to hoard one of the things that is essential to us all.

One local convenience store is offering to trade toilet paper for lottery tickets.

Country Mart on Union Street is currently accepting toilet paper as currency. Two rolls of toilet paper will net you a $1 scratch ticket, according to a sign on the door.

“We were just trying to have a little fun,” said Country Mart manager Nasir Khan, who admitted that while his store is attempting to lift spirits,  the offer is legit.

Khan said employees are disinfecting the store, sanitizing door handles roughly every 15-20 minutes, and Kahn is sharing his supply of toilet paper with customers in need.

Country Mart is open weekdays from 6:30 a.m.-10 p.m. and on the weekend from 7 a.m.-10 p.m.
