Dig into a book this summer at Southwick library

SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Public Library invites everyone to dig into a good book this summer.
The 2013 Dig Into Reading Suntime Reading Program is full of fun for kids ages two through entering six grade, with the young adult theme of Beneath the Surface for youth entering grades seven through 12, and the adult program has the theme Groundbreaking Reads.
Children’s Librarian Margo Storozuk said the summer reading program is so important for children who are already reading.
“It’s important to continue reading throughout the summer,” said Storozuk. “And, it’s a really fun program with great events lined up.”
Special events include: Felt making workshop (Grades 4-6) at 10:30 a.m. July 16; Alex the Jester – Meet a real court jester! (All Ages) at 1:30 p.m. July 17; Beading Workshop (Grades 4-6) at 10:30 a.m. July 22; Star Wars Symposium with Jedi Peter Struzziero (All Ages) at 10:00 a.m. July 26; Fossils and Rocks with John Westcott (All Ages) Aug. 1; and Book Discussion (Grades 5-6) at Noon Aug. 13.
“We also have a drop-in craft every Thursday,” said Storozuk.
Pre-registration is taking place now and the program runs from June 24 – Aug. 2. With coupons for free gifts at area businesses, weekly prize drawings, weekly crafts and more special events this year, the program is sure to be better than ever.
A grand prize of a free ticket to the Big E will be drawn at the end of the summer in both the children and young adult program.
Young Adult Specialist Diane Caruso said program participants will receive a raffle chance each time they visit the library. One prize will be drawn weekly for adults and young adults, while children will have four drawings each week.
Special programs for young adults include a reptile presentation June 26, painting with wool July 16, a watercolor painting workshop July 24, Chinese cooking lesson July 30, and a book discussion Aug. 21.
The Southwick Public Library will kick off its Adult Suntime Reading Program “Groundbreaking Reads” Monday, June 24, by inviting all adult library patrons to take a chance on winning the first weekly prize by filling out one entry form for each book they completed that week from the library’s collection.
To be eligible for the program prizes, patrons in good standing need to be sure the selection they enter is from the library’s fiction or biography section. CD books are acceptable.
Each Friday of the six-week program, one patron’s name will be chosen from the participants to receive a themed-related prize. Also, one special Bonus Prize will be awarded from among all the losing entries on the Friday of the program.
The Friends of the Southwick Public Library will continue the summer fun with its annual Book Sale Aug. 8-10.
Book collections begin in the Community Room Aug. 5-7 during regular library hours. This, the second annual end of the summer sale, was scheduled as a result of the success of last year’s summer sale, and will feature a Friends Only Preview from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 8 followed by the sale Friday, Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Patrons interested in becoming Friends will note the cost remains at $5 for an individual membership, or $10 for a family, any size, and may be paid at the preview or before at the Circulation Desk.
The Friends met last week to discuss the sale and also decided on funding for passes at area museums and destinations. These are the Basketball Hall of Fame, Holyoke Children’s museum, Magic Wings, Norman Rockwell Museum, The Zoo at Forest Park, Mystic Seaport, New England Air Museum and The Vintage Radio Museum of Ct.
The library will be closed Saturdays for the summer from June 29 until Aug. 31.
