Contractors tour garage

SOUTHWICK – Six contractors attended a required pre-bid walkthrough at the old Department of Public Works garage Tuesday.
The town is seeking vendors to demolish the garage, located behind the police station.
Buildings and Grounds Manager John Westcott and Chief Administrative Officer Karl Stinehart, along with a representative of project engineer ECS, fielded questions from the contractors in regards to water and sewer lines, electrical connections and asbestos.
Stinehart said the asbestos was abated last year, and Westcott said there is no power or water to the building.
“The sewer connection will be broken before you start demolition,” Westcott told the group.
The approximately 60-by-50-foot building should be a straightforward demo, Westcott said, adding there is nothing left worth salvaging or scrapping.
“The steel could be salvaged but it is covered with lead paint,” he said, the removal of which would be more costly that what the town could earn by selling the steel. “It will be hauled off and eventually everything will be recycled.”
The project is bid out under MGL Ch. 30 B and requires Massachusetts State Prevailing wages, a five-percent bid on the total value, and the mandatory pre-bid walkthrough.
The sealed bids must be received by Nov. 7. The bids will be open that day. The estimated project cost is $23,000.
“The bid is for the base of demolition,” said Stinehart. ‘Depending how the bids come in, there could be add-ons.”
The add-on alternate includes the removal of concrete as well as the level demo of the building itself.
Another required pre-bid walkthrough is set for Wednesday at the Southwick Public Library for an insulation project, as well as one for heating and cooling.
Representatives from WM Excavation and Demo, Crestview Construction, Truck Crane Services, Inc., WME, ABW, Inc., and Jaymor walked through the garage, which was built in the late 1940s.
