EEE threat forces high school schedule changes

WESTFIELD – Due to the “high” risk level threat for the EEE virus, several area schools are exercising caution by temporarily suspending outdoor night activities and moving up start times earlier in the day.
Late Thursday afternoon, the city’s Public Schools Department released a statement notifying the public of the restrictions now put in place for athletic events.
All athletic activities – games and practices – must be concluded by 6 p.m., unless they are played in a district that is not under the EEE warning.
The Friday night football game between the Westfield Bombers and East Longmeadow Spartans was postponed, and will now be played Saturday at East Longmeadow High School at 1 p.m.
The Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School District also adopted a similar policy Friday, requiring all practices to end prior to 6 p.m., and outdoor home games to end prior to 6:30 until further notice.
High schools are not the only ones taking precautions.
Westfield State University announced late Friday afternoon that it will not hold outdoor activities from dusk until dawn. Visit WestfieldStateOwls.com for the latest changes.
Roots Soccer League also cancelled all evening games Friday.
