HUNTINGTON – The Gateway Regional High School boys’ soccer team advanced to play in the Western Massachusetts Division IV semifinals with a 2-0 quarterfinal victory over visiting Smith Academy (5th seed) Monday night.
Nick McLafflin gave Gateway a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 19th minute, and Josh Baillargeon provided the insurance with a score late in the first half. Calvin Dowers assisted on both plays.
Gateway goalie Mike Arel earned the shutout, collecting eight saves in net. Smith Academy goalkeeper Cam Woodward had six.
Ben VanHeynigen had a great game defensively for the Gators.
“We made the final four so it was a good night all around,” Gateway coach Tim Gamble said.
Gateway (14-4-2) advance to take on top-seeded Hopkins Academy in the semifinals Wednesday night at Northampton High School at 7.
