Gators tie, Saints win in thrillers

HUNTINGTON – Gateway outshot Holyoke Catholic 10-2 Friday night but had to settle for a 0-0 tie against Holyoke Catholic in a high school girls’ soccer game.
The Gators’ defense held the Gaels in check for most of the time, and goalie Brooke Fairman had two saves in a shutout effort.

Voc-Tech 1, Commerce 0
Katie Nesmelova scored in the second half off a pass from Brandi VanGelder to notch the game-winner for Westfield Voc-Tech. Tigers’ goalie Megan Illnicky made four saves and Amber Lindsay played well in midfield.

St. Mary 1, Pathfinder 0
Darby Bailey scored with 1:15 remaining in regulation to lift St. Mary to a thrilling 1-0 win over visiting Pathfinder on senior night. Several Saints players also wore pink ribbons around their socks and in their hair for breast cancer awareness

BOYS’ SOCCER
Westfield Voc-Tech 4, Ware 0
Dmitri Stepanchuk and Tyler Hall each scored for Westfield Voc-Tech, and Alex Makarchuk added a pair of second half goals in the team’s shutout. Dominic Rosario, Colin Fecteau, Ian Fecteau, and Hall delivered the assists.
Adam Guilbert had a great game at the sweeper position for the Tigers and Ian Fecteau was solid at center-fullback.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Southwick def. South Hadley, 15-25, 25-18, 25-20, 21-25, 17-15
Hannah Sitler (5 blocks), Simone Thibault (20 digs, 6 aces, 5 kills), and Ashley Lizgrove (5 aces, 5 kills, 2 blocks) led Southwick in a thriller.

FIELD HOCKEY
Northampton 3, Westfield 0
Northampton scored three goals in the first 24 minutes to defeat Westfield. Jess Hale (3 saves) and Karly Mastello split time in goal for the Bombers.
