WESTFIELD – Shane Mastello (20) and Brett Turban (19) combined for 39 of Gateway’s 45 points, and the Gators outscored the St. Mary Saints 17-8 in the fourth quarter of a high school boys’ basketball game to pull away with a 45-40 win in the Box Out Cancer Challenge Friday night at Westfield Technical Academy High School.
“It was tough hold those two guys down,” St. Mary coach Joe Molta said. “They sort of took it to us. They wore us down.”
Jake Butler led St. Mary with 15 points, followed by Drew Collins (9), Andrew Illnicki (8), and Gio DePergola (8).
“It was a very, very good basketball game,” St. Mary coach Joe Molta said. “Both teams played very hard.”
Smith rallies past WTA
Smith Vocational 38, Westfield Technical Academy 34
Smith Voke outscored Westfield Tech 13-7 in the fourth quarter to rally past the Tigers in the first of two games Friday night on Day 2 of the Box Out Cancer Challenge.
Luis Acosta led Smith Voke with 12, and Travis Wolf had 10.
Josh Bush and Tyler Starzyk each finished with eight for Westfield Tech, which led 18-12 at the half.
Rams leap to 2-0
Southwick 50, Frontier 37
Ryan LeClair and Nick Hough scored 17 and 12 points, respectively, for Southwick. The Rams improved to 2-0.
O’s ground Bombers
Belchertown 77, Westfield 46
Kayla Henry drained 33 points and Madison Duffy chipped in 12 as Belchertown ran away with it at home.
Three players notched double digits in the scoring column for Westfield – Olivia Hadla (13 points), Kaela Mochak (11), and Casey Almeida (10).
Smith chases Gators
Smith Academy 29, Gateway 6
Emma Kelly and Mary Whalen scored eight points apiece to help fuel Smith Academy’s win at home. Gabrielle Goralczyk led Gateway with three.
Bombers rout Brownies

Elizabeth Dion (200 freestyle, 2:14.31; 500 free, 5:49.88) and Sara Russell (50 free, 28.07; 100 free, 1:04.65) each won two events at Agawam to help Westfield remain unbeaten at 3-0.
Brownies clip Bombers
Agawam 94, Westfield 84
Cole Viamari and Nick Rosso took two events apiece to lead Westfield. Rosso won the 50 freestyle (23.28) and 100 butterfly (55.75). Viamari finished first in the 200 free (1:56.31) and 500 free (5:31.97).
“It was a rather exciting meet – a lot of close races,” Westfield coach Tom Lewis said. “Westfield just came up a little short in the last relay.”
