GRANVILLE – The Granville-Tolland Dollars for Scholars is hosting a mail-a-thon on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Granville Town Hall.

According to Kris LeFebvre, Chapter President for Granville-Tolland Dollars for Scholars, they’re in need of volunteers to assist with folding, stuffing, and stamping envelopes. The mailings will be sent to all homeowners in Granville and Tolland.

Inside the envelope is the Dollars for Scholars’ annual letter that informs the community about what they’ve been doing over the past year. This includes their annual appeal of support and information for homeowners to make a donation to the Granville-Tolland Dollars for Scholars.

LeFebvre noted that the majority of the funding they receive comes from the townspeople. She also recalled that years ago the organization would receive as much as $17,000 each year but now it’s around $10,000 from residents each year.

“The generosity between our two towns is so wonderful to see,” said LeFebvre. “We’re trying to do what is best for the students.”

Besides the funding from the residents, Dollars for Scholars raises money by taking part in community events like parking cars at the Motocross Nationals in Southwick and helping at the annual Granville Harvest Fair.

Besides the need for volunteers for Monday’s mail-a-thon, LeFebvre added that they’re “in such urgent need for volunteers” for the rest of the year and beyond. Similar to other volunteers in the organization, LeFebvre has been involved with Dollars for Scholars for around 15 years and wants to see new people join and take over.

“We just really need to start passing it on to the next generation,” said LeFebvre. “Our board has been shrinking just through attrition.”

The Granville-Tolland Dollars for Scholars meets four times a year, which doesn’t count the fundraising events that they take part in. Founded in 1974, the community-based organization promotes scholarships, community involvement, and leadership to high school and college students.

Providing scholarships for both high school and college students who live in Granville or Tolland, the average scholarship they provide to each student is about $1,000. Between the two communities last year, approximately $25,000 in scholarships was awarded.
