WESTFIELD – A sparkling effort from one Whip City high school pitcher and some sharp hitting from his teammates equaled shining success on the local diamond Tuesday.
St. Mary’s pitcher Matthew Hannoush tossed a complete game, and three players had multi-hit games to lead the Saints past Gateway 8-1 Tuesday night at Bullens Field.
Hannoush scattered four hits, struck out four batters, and walked two in a solid effort on the mound. He allowed just one unearned run, and was backed by a nearly flawless defensive effort from his teammates (one error).
Gateway jumped out to an early 1-0 with a run in the top of the first inning, but it was short-lived. St. Mary bounced back with two runs in each of the second and fourth innings with a four-run inning sandwiched in between in the third.
Shawn Gezotis (2-for-3, walk, 2 stolen bases, 2 RBIs) started the scoring off in the bottom half of the second inning with a bases-loaded, two-out double. The Saints never looked back.
Gezotis, Charlie White (2-for-4, 2 stolen bases, 2 runs scored), and Jacob Butler (2-for-2, walk, stolen base, 2 runs scored, RBI) collected two hits apiece for St. Mary.
Saints’ Hunter Authier (hit, walk, 2 RBIs), Steve McKenna (hit, RBI) and Colin Blake (RBI) also contributed offensively.
Tyler Heeter had a decent night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double for Gateway. He also stole three bases.
Jayden Marge and Cole Main had the only other hits for the Gators.
Both teams return to action Thursday, beginning at 4 p.m. St. Mary travels to Ware to take on the Indians while Gateway hosts the Hampshire Red Raiders.
