Knightville Dam gets first coat of paint since 1942

WESTFIELD – Over the last two weeks, the Knightville Dam Bridge received its first coat of paint since it was built in 1942.

The Army Corps of Engineers hired PS Bruckel Inc. out of Avon, New York for the job. Superintendent Matt Nasca said they hung tarps over the bridge, dropped cables and drilled into it to support the scaffolding, which they raised as they sandblasted and sprayed the structure.

On Monday, Dec. 23, a beautiful sunny day in the 40’s, the crew was rolling up the cable to take it away, after crew members Kevin Farr and Alex Pfendler had just finished the last bit of paint.

During the job however, which they started on Dec. 9, they saw snow, rain, sleet and brutally cold temperatures. Nasca said if the weather had been like it was the last day, the job would have been completed a week earlier.

Wrapping up last Monday, the crew was all smiles.

“Last job of the year,” Nasca said, adding, “It’s beautiful country out here.”
