Lancers hold off Bombers

LONGMEADOW – One of Western Massachusetts’ leaders in high school boys’ soccer, Longmeadow scored with about 10 minutes remaining in the first half, and held on to defeat visiting Westfield 1-0 Tuesday.
“It’s always tough to lose,” Westfield coach Andrew Joseph said, “but we were really happy with our effort today. We had a solid game plan coming into the game, and we executed it.”
Longmeadow’s Max Robbins delivered a corner kick out to the middle of the field, and Lancer Joe Wint one-timed it into the net for the game-winner.
“We were toe to toe with them for most of the game,” he added. “Just happy with how hard the kids worked.”
Ian Saltmarsh made a couple of fantastic saves, and several others for a total of 10.
Longmeadow improved to 10-2-1. Westfield fell to 6-3-4.

Tigers shut out Saints
Westfield Technical Academy 3, St. Mary 0

Josh Bush netted a hat trick, and Westfield Tech rolled to a victory between Whip City foes at Westfield Middle School North.
“Josh’s hard work paid dividends,” Westfield Tech coach Kyle Dulude said.

“Our youth is really stepping up,” coach Dulude said. “We had a great practice (Monday), and it would be great to see this young bunch keep it together. (I am) extremely proud of what they are doing on the field and who they are becoming together.”

Tigers silence Red Raiders
Westfield Technical Academy 4, Commerce 0

Westfield Tech captain Heather Lannon had a hand in three of Westfield Tech’s four goals, and the Tigers held the Commerce Red Raiders without a shot on goal on the road in Springfield.
Lannon scored two goals and assisted on Liliya Stepanchuk’s goal. Arianna Levere scored unassisted. Chantal Parenteau and Stepanchuk also finished with one assist apiece.

Rams, Red Raiders tie
Southwick 0, Hampshire 0

Hannah Gerrish and Tori Richburg made two saves apiece in combining for a shutout in net for Southwick. The Rams entered the game having defeated Lenox 2-1 Saturday, thanks to goals from Lydia Kinsman and Aelish McGivney. Gerrish made seven saves in that contest.

The Gators escaped Frontier with a scoreless tie.

Southwick 24, Westfield Technical Academy 0

Jagger Turgeon shot a 38, Bradley Durand finished with a round of 41, and James Longhi had a 42 for Southwick (13-2 overall, 10-0 league) at Edgewood Country Club.

Bombers split
Westfield’s Sophie Gronbeck placed first overall, followed by teammates Mia McDonald (4th overall), Mary Philpott (7th), Clara Hinck (8th), and Libby Irwin (9th). Bombers’ senior captain Ally Irwin had an exceptionally strong finish on the steep hills in Monson, along with breakout runs by first-year runners Elizabeth Baker, Angela Hinck, and Chloe McGrievey, whose times eclipsed recent times on easier courses.

Drohen leads Rams
Southwick 23, East Longmeadow 38; Longmeadow 20, Southwick 43

Southwick’s Becca Drohen won the tri-meet race in 21:38.

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY
Rams’ Carroll leads field
Longmeadow 22, Southwick 39; East Longmeadow 24, Southwick 37

Southwick’s Bill Carroll took home the gold (18:16). Jack Davis also cracked the top 10, placing sixth for the Rams in 19:33.

CROSS COUNTRY – St. Mary’s Results
Rougemont, Walz lead Saints’ way

St. Mary’s Ally Rougemont finished 6th overall for the girls with a time of 23:36. Saints’ Joe Walz placed 10th overall in 19:07.

JV GIRLS’ SOCCER
Southwick 1, Hampshire 1

Eighth grader Bella Doyle scored off a pass from sophomore Shea O’Neill for Southwick’s lone goal. Rams’ goalies Isabella Poules, Maya Daley, and Lauren Sussman combined for eight saves.
Southwick improved to 6-4-2.

St. Mary 2, Franklin Tech 2

Allie Goodreau scored two goals in a road tie for St. Mary. Saints’ Jess Crosby had one assist.
“Our momentary lapse in the middle of the second half ultimately cost us a win,” St. Mary Andy Lussier said. “Franklin Tech was pushing hard and caught us watching which allowed them to get a number of quality shots on Aisling Butler. Aisling made some great saves … and kept us in it to the end.”

Belchertown 4, Westfield 0
Four different Orioles scored, and goalie Samantha Burkes made five saves to lead Belchertown in a shutout. Westfield goalie Lindsay Cousins finished with 26 saves.

JV GIRLS’ SOCCER
Southwick 2, Lenox 0

Maura Wurster scored two goals, and Lauren Sussmann made eight saves in Southwick’s shutout.
Eighth grader Eve Stetson and sophomore A’Janei Thompson earned assists. Thompson and freshman Savannah Leduc played exceptionally well.
