Mary A. Schechterle

EAST OTIS:  Mary A. (Axiotis) Schechterle (1923 – 2022) passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, February 6, 2022, just three days short of her 99th birthday. She was born in Springfield, MA to the late Pantelis and Stella (Couzelis) Axiotis. She grew up in Springfield and attended Commerce High School. She made a wonderful life there for many years with her late husband of 55 years Allen A. Schechterle, who died October 28, 2012. She worked as a Bookkeeper for many years before retiring at the age of 67. She spent the next 30+ years enjoying her home on Otis Reservoir with her family – swimming, waterskiing, kayaking and sitting on her swing with a crossword puzzle in hand in later years. Many trips to Mohegan Sun. Daily drives to Lee and Great Barrington for breakfast and lunch up until a week before she passed. Mary enjoyed her life to the fullest and always said how lucky and blessed she was.

She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by her only daughter Laura Bacon and her husband (“son”) Eugene of East Otis, MA. She was the world’s greatest YiaYia to her two grandchildren, Jeffrey Bacon and his wife Leah of Blandford, MA, and Kelly Bacon of Enfield, CT and her “precious” great-grandson, Jace Bacon. Mary also leaves her “Baby Sister” Frosena Rigas of New Jersey. She was predeceased by 8 brothers and sisters.

We would like to thank Larry, Mark and Kate at L&M Auto for attending to those terrible blinking lights on her dashboard and those almost daily gas fill-ups.

Firtion Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield, MA, is handling all arrangements and services will be private.
