WESTFIELD – Junior guard Chelsea Moussette (Hampshire/Southampton, Mass.) posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists to lead Westfield State to a 94-83 win over Keene State in the Owls women’s basketball season opener at the Spaulding Gymnasium in Keene, N.H. on Tuesday night.
Westfield (1-0), the nation’s highest scoring team last season, picked up where they left off.
The Owls had four players score in double-figures, as sophomore Melissa Gray (Peabody, Mass.) and senior Lucy Barrett (Mt. Greylock/Williamstown, Mass.) each scored 19, and Kierra McCarthy (Ludlow, Mass.) added 14.
Westfield led 41-39 after a back and forth first half, then pulled away with a 10-0 run that spanned the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth. Moussette drained a three-pointer to close the third quarter to spark the run, and the Westfield led 87-69 after a Siobhan Moriarty (Danvers, Mass.) free throw with 6:30 left in the game.
Westfield State shot 12-34 from three point range, and forced 33 turnovers from Keene (1-2), which Westfield converted into 33 points.
Keene State was led by 21 points from Samira Sangare, and 18 from Emily McPadden.
