North, South set table

The Whip City better get ready for some post-Fourth of July fireworks. The North and South Little League All-Stars won in dominating fashion Monday night to set up a matchup of Westfield unbeatens Thursday at Papermill Field, with the winner guaranteed of a top seed in the district semifinals.

Westfield North 15, Longmeadow 2 (4 inn.)

Matt Masciadrelli went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and four runs; the offense delivered up and down the lineup; and, Westfield North’s pitchers combined to shut down the Longmeadow attack.

Aidan Dunn, Dillon Bazegian, Sean Mitchell, Connor Cottengim, and Nathan Boucher all hit doubles for Westfield.

Dalen Mochak (4 Ks) pitched four inning of no-hit ball for the North, yielding to reliever Bazegian, who allowed two runs and struck out two batters. Dunn recorded the game’s final three outs on eight pitches to preserve the mercy-ruling.

Westfield North improved to 3-0.

Westfield South 9, Agawam 3

Tyler Delgado scattered three hits and struck out nine batters in five innings on the mound for the South (3-0). Delgado allowed three runs. He also helped himself at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and RBI.

Westfield’s Adam Kearing went 2-for-3 with a key three-run triple to highlight a five-run second inning. He finished with four RBIs.

Andrew Tobias (2-for-4, triple, RBI) and Connor Koziol (2-3, 2 runs) also delivered offensively for the South.

The victory sets up an intriguing game between the city’s best.

“Both teams are doing well,” Westfield South manager Mike Raposo said. “It makes for a great end of the season.”

The North and South both hope to extend their respective seasons well beyond the district tournament level, sectionals, states, and beyond.

On Thursday, one Westfield team will be one step closer to making that prospect an attainable goal. Game time is 6 p.m.

LL SOFTBALL SENIOR ALL-STARS

Westfield 14, Spencer-Brookfield 6

Westfield staved off elimination with an all-around effort in the pitching department (Taylor St. Jacques tossed a complete-game, 6-hitter, striking out 12), with a collective offensive effort, and with strong defensive plays from CF Vicky Camp, 3B Madison Brokney, 1B Karly Mastello, 2B Alyssa Clement, and C Kaitlyn Puza.

Brockney (3-4, walk, 3 runs), Camp (2-5, 2 runs), Puza (3-4, 2 runs), Paige Templeton (2-5, run), Clement (2-5, 2 RBIs, run), Mastello (2-5, HBP, RBI, 2 runs), Jen Moller (2 runs, sac-fly), and Brittany Kowalski (hit) helped the sparks fly on offense.

Westfield advances to play Winchendon Tuesday night, July 10, in Worcester at 5:30.
