Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013
6:39 a.m.: larceny, Meadow Village Apartment, 34 Meadow St., a caller reports his wife’s van was broken into overnight and property was stolen, the responding officer reports the victim said that she forgot to lock the van and set the alarm when she parked it and when she returned to it she found the contents had been strewn about and her purse was missing, see 4:18 p.m. entry;
7:56 a.m.: officer wanted, Meadow Village Apartment, 34 Meadow St., a caller reports his unlocked car was entered overnight but nothing was stolen or damaged, the caller does not require a formal report but wants the incident documented;
9:10 a.m.: abandoned vehicle, Pheasant Drive, a officer followed up on a reported abandoned vehicle which had been checked Tuesday, at that time the owner had assured the officer that the vehicle would be moved but it is still in place, there was no response at the nearby residence and the vehicle was towed to the police impound yard;
9:33 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Dartmouth Street, a patrol officer reports registration plates were seized from a vehicle found to have revoked registration due to a lack of insurance;
9:39 a.m.:  accident, White Avenue, a caller reports striking a pedestrian with a vehicle, the responding officer reports the 85-year-old woman was not in a crosswalk when she was struck, the woman was transported to Noble Hospital where she was admitted, no report of her condition is available;
12:38 p.m.: arrest, Main Street, a detective reports he encountered a person believed to be the subject of outstanding warrants, five warrants were confirmed, James S. Guillmette, 31, of 419 Southwick Road, was arrested on the warrants;
1:35 p.m.: burning complaint, Hampden Street, a caller reports neighbors are burning brush near her wooden fence, the responding firefighters report the resident was instructed to extinguish the fire;
2:07 p.m.: arrest, Thomas Street, a patrol officer reports he encountered a person believed to be the subject of outstanding warrants, two warrants were confirmed, John J. Lafreniere, 49, of 330 Elm St., was arrested on the warrants;
2:08 p.m.: identity fraud, Southwick Road, a resident came to the station to complain that she attempted to open a utility account and found that one had already been opened with her social security number without her knowledge;
2:33 p.m.: officer wanted, Franklin Avenue School, the school principal requests that police document incidents of children bringing saws to school to make forts in nearby wooded areas, the responding officer reports he observed that several trees had been cut and an area on school property had been cleared for a fort;
2:57 p.m.: breaking and entering, Meadow Street, a resident came to the station to report that her vehicle was broken into the night before, the responding officer reports the caller said that there are no signs of forcible entry to the vehicle parked on Meadow Street and the only property stolen was a set of keys;
4:18 p.m.: found property, Hanover Street, a caller reports finding a purse in a Hanover Street parking lot, the responding officer reports the purse was found to belong to a woman who reported it had been stolen from her vehicle earlier in the day, the purse was returned to its owner who said that the contents appeared to be intact;
4:32 p.m.: animal complaint, West Silver Street, a caller reports he inadvertently ran over a large animal which he believes my be a beaver, the responding officer reports the animal was a beaver with an apparently broken back, the officer dispatched the animal and the carcass was transported to Twiss Street;
6:24 p.m.: assist citizen, Thomas Street, a caller reports her keys are locked inside her running car, the responding firefighters report entry was gained;
6:44 p.m.: disturbance, Robinson Drive, a caller reports neighbors are using an air-powered potato gun and disturbing his peace, the responding officer reports the potato gun meets the definition of an infernal machine and it was confiscated;
7:40 p.m.: animal complaint, Russell Road, a caller reports a raccoon was struck by a vehicle but is still alive, the responding officer reports the animal was alive but obviously suffering so it was immediately dispatched, the officer reports the resident provided him with a trash bag and a box into which he deposited the carcass for pickup the next day;
8:34 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Main Street, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop, the officer reports the vehicle was towed due to a registration infraction;
11:29 a.m.: assault, Meadow Street, a person came to the station to complain that he was assaulted on Sept. 28 by a known person, the responding officer reports the complainant said that a friend he has not seen recently asked him to come to his residence and while he was there a known person assaulted him, the officer reports the man was advised that he can seek a criminal complaint at Westfield District Court;

Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013
1:36 a.m.: recovered motor vehicle, Bay Street at Cambridge St, Springfield, State Police reports a car reported stolen Oct. 1 in Westfield has been recovered in their city, the shift supervisor reports an attempt was made to notify the owner;
10:04 a.m.: assist other agency, Elm Street, an officer detailed to assist health, fire and building inspectors reports numerous code violations were found, a young child was found to be living in unsafe condition and the Department of Children and Families was notified;
1:32 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Meadow Street at Main Street, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop, the vehicle’s registration was found to be expired and it was towed to the police impound yard, the officer reports the operator was provided a courtesy transport to an Otis Street address;
2:00 p.m.: accident, King Street Extension at Berkshire Dive, a patrol officer reports that his investigation into an accident revealed that an off duty officer observed two youths racing their vehicles and one operator lost control, crossed the roadway and drove on a resident’s lawn, one of the youths’ parents was advised of the boy’s activities and a message was left for the other boy’s parents;
3:06 p.m.: assist other department, Connor Avenue, a deputy fire chief requests a uniformed officer to accompany him as he makes an inspection of smoke detectors, the responding officer reports there were no smoke detectors found;
3:40 p.m.: animal compliant, Whitney Playground, Sackett Street, multiple callers report a dog was attacked by another dog in the area of the disused railroad bridge and one of the callers said that the aggressive dog had not been on leash, the responding officer reports one of the dogs and its owner had left but a witness identified the man and said that his unrestrained dog attacked another dog which was walking on lead with its owner, the officer reports that the victim dog showed blood but was walking without apparent difficulty, the officer spoke to the owner of the suspect dog who denied his dog had been loose, the incident was referred to the animal control officer for action;
4:33 p.m.: disabled vehicle, South Broad Street at East Silver Street, a patrol officer reports a disabled armored car, the responding officer reports the armored car ran out of fuel and he stayed with the vehicle while fuel was brought to it;
6:16 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Frederick Street, a patrol officer reports a routine check of a parked vehicle revealed that the registration plates had been issued to another vehicle, the officer reports he found that the plates which had been issued to the vehicle had been seized when the vehicle was stopped and the operator was found to have had a suspended license, the vehicle was towed to the police impound yard;
6:27 p.m.: found property, Powdermill Village, 126 Union St., a caller reports her daughter found an ATM card on a sidewalk near her home, the responding officer reports the card was transported to the station for safe keeping;
6:36 p.m.: arrest, North Elm Street, a detective supervisor reports that pursuant to an ongoing investigation two persons were arrested on narcotics charges, Steven J. Nikiel, 37, of 8 Conner Ave., was arrested for distribution of a Class A drug (a subsequent offense) and Ronald J. Markett, 46, was arrested for possession of a Class A drug and conspiracy to violate drug laws;
7:17 p.m.: fireworks complaint, Lockhouse Road, a caller reports hearing gunshots in the distance, the responding officer reports that fireworks were seized for destruction at a Norton Street address;
10:13 p.m.: suspicious activity, Union Street, a caller reports someone is throwing something from the railroad overpass at the Springfield Road end of Union Street, two additional callers reported their windshields had been shattered by rocks thrown from the trestle, the responding officers report a search of the area did not yield a suspect.
