SPRINGFIELD – Westfield State University women’s cross country placed third at the 22-team Western New England Invitational on Saturday.
Owls’ senior Ashley Monahan (Agawam/Springfield, Mass.) covered the 5k course in 20:19 seconds, finishing 14th amongst 242 runners and first for Westfield State.
Sophomore Lindsey Wassung Feeding Hills / Agawam) finished in 23rd place and second for the Owls after traversing the course in 20:43. Sophomore Lauren Izabel (Enfield, Conn. / Suffield) clinched 37th place in the race and third for Westfield with a time of 21:12.
The University of New England won the team title with a score of 17, followed by Roger Williams (126) in second and Westfield State (150) in third.
Owls’ All-American runner Jessie Cardin (Sutton, Mass.) did not compete in this week’s race.

LECLAIR TOP OWL: Brandon Leclair finished in 11th place individually to lead the Westfield State men’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the Western New England Invitational race on Saturday.
Leclair, who covered the 8k course in 27:30, was followed home by Andrew Simons in 20th in 27:57, Connor Gottzmann (22nd – 28:03), Eric Latiner (28th – 28:16 ) and , Sam Harding in (43rd – 28:55).
SUNY-Delhi won the team race with 34 total points. The University of New England was second with 115, followed by Westfield with 119 and Worcester State with 130. Twenty-one teams and 193 runners contested the race.
The Owls will be idle next weekend before returning to action at the MASCAC Championships at the Doyle Conservation Center in Leominster, Mass. on October 29. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
