WESTFIELD – Kendyl Haney (Ashland, Mass./ Ashland) had 16 kills, including two set winners to lead Westfield State University volleyball past Bridgewater State, 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 11-25, 25-23), on Homecoming weekend in the Woodward Center.
The MASCAC win lifts the Owls to 10-12 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the Bears slip to 9-17 and 2-2.
The Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead, controlling the first set from start to finish. Bridgewater responded in the second, staking a 23-19 margin and never trailing to that point. The Owls, however, rallied for six consecutive points with Haney driving home the winner.
Bridgewater forced the fourth set convincingly behind strong play from Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I./ Narragansett) and Sydney Bennett (North Attleboro, Mass./ North Attleboro), who recorded 13 and 11 kills respectively on the day.
Westfield extended their fourth set lead to 23-17 before Bridgewater cut it back to 24-23 via a late run punctuated by two Maymon kills. Haney responded with the final attack of the game, driving the ball cross court to seal the win.
Westfield’s Courtney Ryan (Quincy, Mass./ Quincy) recorded 36 assists on the evening and Bridgewater’s Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H./ Gilford) posted 39.
Shannon Shea (Chelmsford, Mass./ Chelmsford) pitched in 12 kills and 11 digs for the win.
Westfield hosts Wesleyan on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7:00 p.m. and Bridgewater welcomes Mass. Maritime on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 6:00 p.m.
