Owls defeat Rams in LEC Opener

WESTFIELD – Marina Small (South Harwich, Mass.) picked up a goal and an assist as the Westfield State field hockey team defeated Framingham State 4-2 in the first Little East Conference action of the season on Saturday at Maple Street Field.
Framingham got on the board in the 8th minute when Mady Pimental (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored off an assist from Bailey Donelly (Framingham, Mass.). The Owls would answer in the 24th minute when Cheryl Latona (Granby, Conn.) potted one home off a pass from Abby Chernick (Longmeadow, Mass.).
The Owls scored again before the end of the half when Marina Small sent in a corner to Carly Zona (Auburn, Mass.) who sent a strike into the cage.
Westfield extended their lead early in the second frame when Small sent one home off a helper from Brittany Bowes (Leicester, Mass.). A few moments later, Julia Davis (Somerset, Mass.) tacked on the final goal of the night for the Owls after a scramble in front of the cage to make it 4-1.
The Rams cut the lead to 4-2 when Meghann Ackerman (Littleton, Mass.) scored off a corner play from Donelly and Jordyn O’Boyle (Bradford, Mass.), but the Owls would hold them off for the rest of the game to pick up the win.
Westfield outshot the Rams 20-to-6 in the game and 14-to-4 in the second half.
Riley Goulet (Marion, Mass.) and Katie Vamosi (Easton, Mass.) each made a save in net for the Owls, while Grace Pushor (Olde Towne, ME) made eight saves in net for the Rams.
Westfield was awarded eight penalty corners to the Rams two.
The Owls will be back in action against Mount Holyoke at Alumni Field on Tuesday, September 11th at 7:00 pm.
The Rams travel to Plymouth on Friday, September 14th for a 7:00 pm contest with the Panthers. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
