FITCHBURG – Frank Zuccaro’s one-timer with 11:34 left in the game snapped a 1-1 tie to lead Westfield State to a 2-1 win over Fitchburg State in a MASCAC ice hockey game at the Wallace Arena on Thursday night.
Westfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead 15:47 into the game on Dalton Jay’s shorthanded goal. Jay’s marker was his team-leading fifth of the season.
Fitchburg tied the game with 28 seconds left in the period on John Celli’s goal.
After a scoreless second period, Zuccaro broke the tie with assists from Jay and Donovan Gardiner.
Westfield out-shot Fitchburg 42-24. Ian Perrier came up with 23 saves for the Owls, including three in the final 10 seconds of the game to preserve the win. Ryan Wysocki stopped 40 shots for the Falcons, which fall to 0-4-2, 0-2-1 in the MASCAC.
Westfield improves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the MASCAC. The Owls travel to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. face off in another MASCAC tilt
