WESTFIELD – Albertus Magnus College’s Ryan Sember (Branford, Conn.) topped the field with a 2-over par 73 to take medalist honors at the Fourth Annual Brett Williamson Invitational men’s golf tournament hosted by Westfield State University at Tekoa Country Club.
Eastern Connecticut State University grabbed the team title with a score of 311, five shots better than runner-up Westfield State University. Mitchell College was third at 324.
The tournament is named in honor of Williamson, a 2011 Westfield State graduate and golfer who passed in 2017 after a long battle with Cystic Fibrosis.
Westfield State was led by senior J.J. Newcombe (Bellingham, Mass.), who placed second in the individual standings with a five-over par 76, tying Eastern Connecticut’s Chris Davidson (New Milford, Conn.) and Mitchell’s Jack Hayes.
The Owls Michael Waldman (Billerica, Mass.) Chris Ervin (N. Chelmsford, Mass.) and Kyle DelSignore (Attleboro, Mass.) tied for 11th with a pair of 80s. Brandon Smith (Feeding Hills, Mass.) finished t-16 with an 81.
The tournament was played at the 6,438-yard Tekoa Country Club, amid calm, humid conditions and temperatures in the 70s. The course is an original 1923 Donald Ross design, which retains five of the original Ross holes, and was redesigned and expanded by Geoffrey Cornish in 1961.
Westfield State will next play on Oct. 4-5 at the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s golf championship at Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield, Mass. The Owls are the defending champions in the event. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
