WESTFIELD – Senior defender Josh McCully scored with 25 seconds remaining in the game and sophomore forward Dalton Jay had two goals and an assist to lead Westfield State University to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over UMass Dartmouth in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference ice hockey game on Saturday evening, Nov. 23.
Westfield won its third straight game to improve to 3-1 in the MASCAC and 3-4 overall. UMass Dartmouth drops to 2-3 and 2-4.
Jay started the comeback with two goals in a 37-second span late in the second period. He scored a power play goal on a shot in the upper left corner after receiving a centering pass from the side of the net from P.J. McCadden. Jay knotted the score with 2:40 remaining in the second stanza when he picked off a pass on a UMass Dartmouth power play and tallied a short handed goal.
McCully scored the decisive goal in the closing seconds after getting a loose puck in front of the net off a deflection by a UMass Dartmouth defender.
Junior forward Shaun Walters scored both of the Corsairs’ goals to stake the visitors to a 2-0 lead midway through the second period.
Westfield outshot UMass Dartmouth, 43-28. Eddie Davey was solid again between the pipes for the Owls with 26 saves. UMass Dartmouth goalie Ben Vandervies recorded 43 saves.
