North Adams – The visiting Westfield State men’s soccer team received goals from three different players as they defeated the MCLA Trailblazers 3-1 this afternoon at Shewcraft Field. With the win, the Owls improve to 3-0 in league play and 3-6-1 overall. MCLA drops to 2-5-2 overall and is 1-2 in the MASCAC.
With the win, Westfield finds itself tied atop the MASCAC table with defending champion Bridgewater State with a 3-0 league mark.
Westfield didn’t take long to get on the scoreboard as they tallied in the second minute of action. Sean Lathrop knocked home a Zack Horn feed to give the Owls an early 1-0 advantage just 1:49 into the contest. The Owls would control the opening half outshooting MCLA 12-3, however the score would remain just 1-0 heading into halftime.
After intermission, Westfield took a 2-0 lead when Legend Mu’Min tallied unassisted in the 53rd minute. The goal was his third of the season and put MCLA against the odds. The Trailblazers showed signs of life just five minutes later when Edward Boateng would score in the 58th minute slicing the deficit in half at 2-1 with plenty of time to play.
The Owls though would have the answer. In the 81st minute, Connor Gilbert would score off a Brodie Keene feed making it 3-1 in favor of the visitors. MCLA would generate a few chances, however they couldn’t find the net giving the Owls the road win.
Alex Kraver earned the win stopping four shots in the process. Kamron Anderson collected 9 saves in a losing effort for MCLA.
For the afternoon, the Owls held an 18-14 shot advantage and a 7-3 mark in corners. Westfield will travel to Elms for a 7:00 p.m. non conference kickoff on Wednesday.
