Owls sprint to championship

WESTFIELD – Junior sprinter Paul James won the 100 meters in a time of 11.15 to highlight the meet as the Westfield State men claimed the team title at the 2018 Jerry Gravel Classic on Saturday.
James also took home a fourth place finish in the 200 meters, and was part of Westfield’s winning 4×100 relay team. James, William Canty, Dorian Johnson, and Mitch Maslowski went around in 42.44, .63 seconds off of the school record set in 1980.
Sophomore Brandon Leclair won the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:49.34, and was followed in by junior Tim Forrest in second in 15:53.22.

The Owls went deep in the 400, placing 2nd-5th with Estefan Jack, Johnson, Connor Gottzmann and Bobby Gardner to score 20 points in that event alone.
Dereck Stone placed second in the long jump, Brent Kane took second in the 400 hurdles and third in the 110 hurdles, and Zac Bentley placed second in the 800 as other top point getters for Westfield.
Westfield finished with 137 points to edge Utica (N.Y.) College (134) in the team scoring. Bridgewater (125) was third and UMass-Dartmouth (95) fourth.
Westfield won the meet for the first time since the 2015 running. The meet is named after the Owls’ retired longtime coach, Jerry Gravel.
