WESTFIELD – Westfield State University’s women’s swimming and diving team has been recognized as a Scholar All-America Team by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).
The Owls posted a collective 3.38 grade point average for the spring 2016 semester, while turning in a 5-3 dual-meet record in the pool. Westfield State had a .500 or better overall record for the 23rd consecutive season under longtime head coach Dave Laing.
To be selected as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, programs must have achieved a grade point average of 3.00 or higher over the Spring semester.
The College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) designated 658 men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, representing 388 colleges and universities as Scholar All-America teams. The recognition comes as a result of each team’s classroom performance in the past semester. It is only the second time in the program’s 30+ year history of the program that more than 600 teams.
MASCAC ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL LEADERS: A total of 853 student-athletes have been honored by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference with selection to the league’s Spring 20 16 All-Academic Team that was released earlier today by Commissioner Angela Baumann.
Student-athletes that compete in championship varsity sports offered by each of the MASCAC institutions during the course of the spring 2015 athletic season and have achieved a 3.20 cumulative or semester-based grade point average during the semester are eligible for selection to the Spring All-Academic Team. The sports recognized are baseball women’s lacrosse, softball and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. The team also includes student-athletes that competed in winter sports during the spring semester.
Westfield State University closed out the spring semester with the most student-athletes on the 2016 MASCAC Spring All-Academic Team with 263 total while Bridgewater State University and Fitchburg State University are next with 127, Worcester State University landed 105 and Salem State University rounded out the group with 75 student-athletes on the team.
“The increase in numbers on the MASCAC Spring All-Academic Team continues to show the strength of academics among the MASCAC student-athletes,” Commissioner Baumann said. “Our student-athletes continue to thrive in the classroom while being successful in the field of play and around the community which is a true testament to the MASCAC and Division III philosophy.”
The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, the nation’s oldest Division III men’s and women’s playing conference, has a rich and storied tradition of competitive success while celebrating excellence in the classroom. MASCAC member schools include Bridgewater State University, Fitchburg State University, Framingham State University, MCLA, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State University, Westfield State University and Worcester State University. Two other institutions, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Plymouth State University, are affiliate members of the conference in the sports of football and men’s ice hockey, while Western Connecticut State University joined the conference as an affiliate member in football beginning in 2014.
WOMEN’S SOCCER TO HOLD CLINIC:
Westfield State University women’s soccer and head coach Todd Ditmar will host a soccer ID clinic on Sunday, August 14, 2016 from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM. The clinic is open to 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 high school graduation class members.
This clinic is designed for elite players interested in competing at the college level. The sessions are designed to valuate individual skill, moment, and knowledge of the game while educating players on small and large soccer concepts. Goal Keepers will receive goalkeeper specific training.
