Owls tie Salem

WESTFIELD – Westfield State University hosted Salem State Saturday afternoon playing to a 1-1 double overtime draw in men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.
Legend Mu’min (Springfield, Mass. / Central) scored the Owls’ first goal in the twenty-third minute of the first half with an assist from Connor Gilbert (Melrose, Mass.) and Brodie Keene (Agawam, Mass.).
About 14 minutes later at 37:35, Mitch Tepe (Sterling, Mass. / Parker Charter) made it a tie game with a header off of a corner play from Tim Kilpatrick (San Clemente, Cali. / Loara).
With 6:42 left in the second half, Westfield’s Joey Pantuosco (Somers, Conn.) and Connor Gilbert (Melrose, Mass.) were in clean against Salem’s goalkeeper Greg Enos (Peabody, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick) who came out of net to defend the cross, but the Owls were unable to lock down a scoring opportunity.
Salem State’s Kelly Abreu (Salem, Mass.) had a shot from the top of the box with 5:42 left in regulation but Westfield’s junior goalkeeper Alex Kraver (West Springfield, Mass.) was able to save the shot, preserving the tie at 1-1.
The Vikings led with 12 shots on goal to Westfield’s 5, and 28 total shots to Westfield’s 17. The Owls led 9-5 in corner kicks.
Kraver made 11 saves and allowed one goal while Enos allowed one goal and made four total saves.
Salem State moves to 1-1-2 and the Owls are now 2-3-1.
