WESTFIELD – Westfield State University picked up an 89-42 win against visiting Mount Ida College in the season opener on Tuesday evening in the Woodward Center.
Forbasaw Nkamebo (Amherst, Mass./ Amherst) was 9-10 from the floor, scored a game high 21 points and added 7 rebounds in the win.
Senior guard Jen Ashton (Beverly, Mass./ Beverly) scored 20 points and tallied a game high six assists.
A 20-3 run at the five minute mark extended a one point Owl lead and paved the way for a 53-28 advantage in the first half.
An aggressive Owls’ defense caused 33 Mount Ida turnovers on the night that resulted in 46 points.
Trish Liotta (Hampton Bays, N.Y./ Hampton Bays) led the Mustangs with 10 points off the bench while starting forward Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass./ Taunton) added nine points and eight rebounds.
Jill Valley (Orange, Mass./ Mahar) and Kirsy Segarra (Holyoke, Mass./ Holyoke) registered 11 and eight points respectively off the Owl bench.
Westfield held a 41-25 edge in rebounds and 21-2 advantage in points from the charity stripe.
Westfield State travels to Waterville, Maine for the Colby College Classic this weekend when they take on Wellesley College on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7:00 p.m. and MIT on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 1:00 p.m. Mount Ida hosts Lesley in their home opener on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 6:00 p.m.
